Le double album 666, aboutissement du groupe Aphrodite’s Child, est le plus bel album de sa carrière. C’est avant tout le projet de Vangelis Papathanassiou qui s’est consacré uniquement au travail de studio. Troublé par les événements de l’époque (révoltes étudiantes à l’échelle mondiale, guerre du Vietnam, festival rock d’Altamont), Vangelis relit l’Apocalypse texte ancien de Saint Jean, disciple de Jésus, inclus dans le Nouveau Testament de la Bible. Interviewé, il déclare que les prédictions de Saint Jean sont en train de se réaliser. Il lui vient alors l’idée folle d’adapter ce texte sur un concept album intitulé 666 (chiffre maléfique).
