Particulièrement instable en ce début de décennie mythique, Eric Clapton va de groupe en projets, celui que la presse et les fans ont surnommé « God » cherche son équilibre. Après Blind Faith et l'épisode Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, voici venir Derek and the Dominos avec Bobby Whitlock (clavier, chant), Carl Radle (basse) et Jim Gordon (batterie). Le groupe enregistre son seul véritable album , Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs en novembre 1970, avec la participation du brillant guitariste Duane Allman venu apporter sa touche de slide. Le groupe se sépare en 1971, alors qu'un second album est en cours d'enregistrement.
