Depuis ses débuts fulgurants en 1976 avec l'album de son groupe The Modern Lovers, Jonathan Richman est devenu un rocker culte. Ce premier essai produit par John Cale est rapidement suivi par Rock'N'Roll With the Modern Lovers (1977) dont s'échappe le hit « Egyptian Reggae ». Avec ou sans son groupe (souvent remanié), le Bostonien naïf plongé dans l'univers brutal du rock s'évertue à peaufiner des mélodies excentriques et touchantes qui parsèment les albums Back In Your Life (1979), Rockin' & Romance (1985) ou le magnifique I, Jonathan de 1992. Au gré de sa fantaisie, Jonathan Richman continue de surprendre par la livraison d'albums country (Jonathan Goes Country, 1990), latino (de Jonathan, Te Vas a Emocionar!, 1993, à A Que Venimos Sino a Caer, 2009) ou définitivement poétiques avec O Moon, Queen of Night on Earth en 2010. En 1998, il joue son propre rôle dans Mary à tout prix.
