Alors que les punks tentent de survivre à l’aube des années 80 et de la new-wave qui annonce son arrivée, Pink Floyd écrit une de ses pièces maîtresses avec ce double album concept, à la pochette mondialement connue. Tirées des angoisses et de la vie de Roger Waters (la perte de son père, sa rancœur envers le gouvernement Thatcher, sa parano de rock star…), les paroles sont aussi cinglantes qu’un coup de couteau. Même si depuis Dark Side of The Moon, le groupe n’a plus rien à prouver en matière de bruitages et d’inventivité, il excelle ici dans des arrangements dithyrambiques et offre une cohésion inouïe tout au long de l’album.
