Robert Kelly Thomas est né le 14 février 1972 à  Landstuhl (Rhénanie-Palatinat) en Allemagne. D'abord chanteur de Tabitha's Secret à partir de 1993, il participe à la formation de Matchbox Twenty en 1995. Alors que les succès s'enchaînent pour le groupe, Rob Thomas collabore avec d'autres artistes, principalement en tant qu'auteur-compositeur.

Rob Thomas reçoit trois Grammy Awards en 1999 pour « Smooth » de Carlos Santana qu'il écrit et chante sur Supernatural. Rob Thomas est no 1 aux Etats-Unis avec son premier album solo, Something to Be en 2005. Son talent d'écriture continue à maturer avec Cradelsong en juin 2009.
