Totalement mythique avant sa réédition en 1996 par le label anglais Blood & Fire, Heart of the Congos était considéré comme un album "perdu" du reggae. Seuls quelques vinyles craquants, et parfois largement tronqués, attestaient que le chef d'oeuvre existait bien. En effet, il s'agit bien d'un sommet du reggae roots, malgré sa date de sortie tardive de 1977. The Congos perpétuent la tradition du trio vocal jamaïcain avec l'accord incroyable des voix de Cedric Myton (contre-ténor ou fausset), Roydel "Ashanti" Johnson (ténor) et Watty Burnett (baryton).
