Ce deuxième album marque un tournant dans la carrière de The Cure, premier volet d’une trilogie qui va les emmener du gris (Faith) au noir absolu (Pornography). Robert Smith, aidé de l’ingénieur du son Mike Hedges, est cette fois-ci aux commandes. Le tempo est plus lent, la basse de Simon Gallup (qui a remplacé Michael Dempsey) déroulant ses motifs hypnotiques et la batterie métronomique de Lol Tolhurst font peser une atmosphère de plomb sur les morceaux. Cette impression de claustrophobie est à peine atténuée par les échappées mélancoliques d’un clavier minimaliste (dues à Matthieu Hartley, qui a rejoint le groupe) et la beauté triste des mélodies chantée d’une voix lointaine, noyée...
