La démarche politique et sociale amorcée par Wayne Coyne avec le précédent album s’accentue ici (illustré par « Free Radicals », peut-être la profession de foi de son auteur), et le renfort de guitares au détriment des effets électroniques « space funk » rend cette création plus rock que toutes les productions des Flaming Lips jusqu’ici. S’il n’est pas aussi foisonnant que The Soft Bulletin, il est le plus abouti du groupe, et bénéficie d’un son encore plus spectaculaire que les deux derniers opus du groupe, remportant même le « grammy » du meilleur enregistrement non classique ; encore une fois, l’écoute d’un album des Flaming Lips rend ici tout son sel au casque. Et les publicitaires...
